Hedge trimming and maintenance in Richmond upon Thames

Picture
Regular pruning of your hedges and shrubs will help them stay dense, healthy, and compact. There is a variety of hedge pruning and trimming techniques, but generally we distinguish between formative pruning of new hedges and shrubs, and maintenance pruning of established hedges

Formative pruning
Formative pruning is required for newly established hedges in the first few years of their growth. It is usually carried out in the winter, or in early spring (unlike maintenance pruning which is generally done in the spring or summer).

Maintenance pruning
Once a hedge or shrub is established, it needs to be trimmed regularly.  Depending on the plant type and size, maintenance pruning should be carried out at least once per year, but might be needed up to every six weeks if there is a desire to maintain strict geometric shape and size.

Hedge removal
If a shrub or hedge is overgrown and cannot be successfully renovated (as is the case for many conifer hedges for example) it needs to be cut down and removed or replaced with a new plant. Our specialists can assist you with fully removing the hedge and ensuring the area it’s ready for replanting or other use.

Hedge trimming and UK law
It is imperative that before any hedge work commences, the growth is thoroughly checked for any bird nesting activity. The UK Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 was implemented to help with bird conservation, and among other things under its Section 1 it is an offence to “intentionally take, damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it is in use or being built, or to intentionally kill, injure or take chicks or adults, or intentionally take or destroy any eggs.” Under this definition of intentional damage falls cutting a hedge where a bird is building a nest or a nest is already present. Therefore, if any nesting activity is detected, the trimming work must be delayed until after the nesting season, which could mean until summer, as late as August, which is the end of the nesting season for most bird species.
